Ride 2022 - Two Big Rivers Ride - Cycle Australia
Cycle Across Oz presents its 2022 Two Big Rivers Ride. The ride consists of three legs which can be ridden individually or combined into a single tour
Dates and costs
15% discount for all 3 legs and 10% discount for 2 legs.
This tour explores the heart of Australia's greatest river system, the Murray Darling Basin. It starts in Adelaide and heads to the mouth of the Murray River before heading north to where the Darling River runs into the Murray River not far from Mildura. It then tracks across country following the Darling River mostly on gravel roads to Bourke. From Bourke, the tour then heads east and a bit north east to cross the Great Divide south east of Bingara and heads down to the finish at the sea at Port Macquarie.
The tour follows minor roads wherever possible - better scenery, quieter and safer. The middle leg is mostly gravel roads with something like 500 kms (300 miles) of gravel. CycleAcrossOz organisers have done a full recce - the roads are rideable - that can change if there is a lot of rain before May 2022.

Logistics. For the Murray River leg you will need to get to Adelaide and depart from Wentworth/Mildura. For the Darling River leg, you will need to get to Wentworth/Mildura and depart from Bourke. For the Back to the Sea leg you will need to get to Bourke and depart from Port Macquarie. Covid travel restrictions are challenging for air travel. Adelaide is an international airport. Adelaide, Mildura, and Port Macquarie are reachable by road and rail/coach, and domestic air services. Access to Bourke and Mildura by rail includes a coach leg - bear that in mind when working out how to transport your bike. The challenging part is going to be how to get your bike from any of the intermediate legs points.
Weather
May is the heart of autumn and the start of winter. Weather is typically quite settled with some chance of rain in the first few days closer to Adelaide and crossing the Great Divide. Days will be cool to moderate and the nights will be cool to cold. The route has been chosen to pray for favourable south west winds. However, there is a 40% chance most of the way for north easterly flows - it will all depend on how warm it is.
For long range rainfall forecasts - look here and pick the regions along the South Australia and New South Wales route and have a look see.
